Counseling Services

In your search for a therapist, you probably want to be sure you select someone who is a good fit for your needs, goals and concerns.  Counselors vary widely in their approach, style and areas of expertise.  Read on to find out if I may be the right counselor for you.

My therapy style is...

Holistic
I believe that true change and transformation must involve the mind, body and spirit.  Therapy approaches that rely primarily on "sit and talk" tend to lean heavily toward the mental and emotional aspects, and exclude the wisdom and healing power of the body and spirit.   I ensure that we tap into all three wells of strength, wisdom and transformation - the mind, body and spirit.

Change-oriented
People generally attend counseling because they want something to change in their life.  I'm passionate about making sure my clients are achieving their desired results.  Once we identify the problems and challenges, I will support you in pursuing the changes you desire through insight, skill-building, brain re-wiring through mindfulness, or reprocessing traumatic memories.

Collaborative
Counseling is not something I do to you or for you.  I am here to provide safe and accepting space for you to express your truth.  I support your exploration of the resistance and barriers to change.  I ask careful questions to help you gain insight into your behaviors, choices and reactions.  I help you pack a toolbox of skills, strategies and resources and affirm your ability to put these tools to good use in daily life.

Relaxing
My clients often report feeling more calm after our sessions because I utilize mindfulness, breathing techniques and guided relaxation to help ease the mind and release tension.  I help clients practice these skills so they can use them to become more relaxed and calm on their own.

Creative
Again, I'm not a huge fan of the "sit and talk" only method of counseling.  I like to bring creative aspects into my work such as guided imagery, journaling, visual art and music.  All of these serve to help us get out of the typical thinking mind and tap into deeper sources of insight, strength and healing.

Experiential
Counseling is so much more than a conversation, it is a collaborative, creative experience that calls forth the client's inner strengths and resources to overcome barriers and pursue their best life.  If you're ready to participate in a transformative process to achieve your desired goals and highest potential, let's get started!

Theoretical framework

Picture

I practice Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy to help my clients observe their troublesome thought patterns and cultivate change through mind-body awareness.

I utilize the latest evidence-based practices for trauma-informed care.  I also draw from family systems theory, somatic experiencing, Hakomi, and creative arts interventions.

I provide in-person and telehealth sessions, depending on the needs of the client.

I work remotely during various times throughout the year and offer telehealth sessions during these times.  If you prefer only in-person sessions, I may not be the best fit for you.

Your privacy is important to me.  All of our interactions and communications are held confidential, except in rare and extreme cases.  I  explain this and other policies in further detail at the initial session.  I will answer any questions you have, and we will decide together how therapy will proceed.

Q and A

Q:  Who are your ideal clients?

A:  I am skilled and experienced helping clients who struggle with anxiety, depression or unstable moods.  Many of my clients are dealing with stressful life situations or major transitions, and find counseling quite helpful to reduce stress and learn coping skills.  I have great success helping people who suffer from overthinking.  I work best with clients who are motivated to change and willing to practice strategies in between sessions.   I particularly enjoy working with college students and young adults.

Q:  Do you work with children?

A:  I welcome clients ages 12 and up.

Q:  Do you work with Couples?

A:  I do not provide couples or marital counseling.  However, I believe that it can be helpful at times to bring in a partner or family member as a part of therapy for my client, with the consent of my client and a clear objective for the session.  I do offer a 5-session series for couples considering marriage or long-term commitment.

Q:  Are you a Christian counselor?

A:  I welcome clients of all faiths and religious backgrounds, as well as those who are not oriented toward faith or religion.
My faith was built on a Christian foundation, which now expresses itself through openness, inclusivity and celebration of the inherent value of all humans.  Spirituality is very important to me and I believe that holistic counseling must recognize mind, body and spirit aspects of human development, growth and change.  I have a particular interest in supporting clients who are spiritually seeking, questioning, doubting, deconstructing or reconstructing their faith.

Q:  How does payment work?

A:  Many of my clients use health insurance to help pay for counseling.  Insurance coverage varies widely, even within the same company, so clients are encouraged to contact their insurance company to verify their coverage and benefits before the first session.  Clients may also choose to pay for counseling, without involving insurance.

Q:  What happens if I need to miss a session?

A:  As long as I have at least 24 hours notice, I'm very flexible with rescheduling.  In the event of last-minute changes or no-shows, there is an $80 charge.  Special consideration may be offered in the case of unavoidable emergencies such as sudden illness or difficulty with transportation.

Q:  I'm ready to get started!  What's the next step?

A:  I offer prospective clients a complimentary consultation by phone to determine if I am the best fit for their needs and goals.  You may reach out by email or by telephone at (540) 478-5981 to initiate this conversation.

What clients are saying...

"Thank you for allowing me the safe space to be myself and feel my feelings.
Most of all, thank you for believing in me."

"Counseling works great for me because I use the suggestions, skills and strategies in my daily life.  This isn't just some theory, it works!"

"When you help me relax, quiet down and breathe in session, I can get out of my head
and hear what my heart is telling me."

"Elizabeth doesn't just say 'm-hmm' and 'how does that make you feel?'.
She says 'would you like to try something new?' and 'what will you be working on this week?'.
I leave our sessions with a game plan."
